Ray Whent (3521) who was at TSM in 1945 died in January 2019. He was a London boy who was unable to complete his Mercury training due to the death of his father. Later he went to sea as a Galley Boy in a BP tanker. He went on to serve with a number of companies including Cunard, Port Line, The Baltic Shipping Company and eventually as a Chief Steward with Shell Tankers. After coming ashore he became a representative for a Bonded Stores supplier and in time became its sales director. After a spell in charge of duty free supplies with the Anglo-Soviet Shipping Company he set up his own marine supply company. Among other interests he was involved with the YMCA where he was active as a fund raiser. In retirement he lived at Botley near Southampton.
