Old Mercury Boys Dinner at the Royal Maritime Club, Portsmouth, postponed until Saturday 1st May 2021 David Hathorn 4587

Hello all.  There was an excellent level of interest in attending a dinner, originally planned for September 2020. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the ending of coronavirus emergency I have agreed, with the Royal Maritime Club, Portsmouth, to move this 1st May 2021. This will coincide with naming ceremony of the Hamble Sea Scouts’ new yacht Spirit of Mercury earlier that day.

The Club

The club is situated adjacent to the Hard waterfront and within yards of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with Victory, Warrior and Mary Rose etc.  The submarine museum in Gosport is a short boat trip away for those interested in getting some sea time in.  The mainline railway station Portsmouth and Southsea is a 100 yards amble, as is the waterfront Gunwharf Quays shopping centre. The club has a swimming pool, a bowling alley, and a good bar.  There is no gym, so you can leave your leotards at home, though more relevantly we will have our own bar.

There is some parking at the club, and a multi storey in the road opposite (50% discount for staying guests).

To book dinner (not accommodation)

Bookable through me. The dinner costs £45 for 3 courses including a glass of fizz before dinner, half bottle wine per person, and coffee and port after.  Though you do not have to choose now the menu options are attached for you to salivate over in advance.

I will have to pay for the dinner in advance so if you wish to attend please send me £10 as a non-refundable booking deposit for each person in your party.  I will then write to you in August for the outstanding £35 per person and your choice of menu.

To pay the deposit for dinner Please state the names of each person in your party.

By cheque to:

David Hathorn. 371 Hunts Pond Road, Fareham, Hants PO14 4PB

To pay the deposit by Bank Transfer – please email me at and I will send you my bank details.

To book accommodation (not dinner)

Please book accommodation direct with the hotel quoting ‘Old Mercury Boys dinner’.

The rooms are all en-suite and after discount cost £125 double, £80 single including an excellent breakfast.

We have a discount on the food and room costs due to our nautical connection. There is also ample alternative hotel/guest house accommodation close by, including a new Premier Inn next door.

There will not be any speeches or a guest speaker; however, I am contemplating something special as appropriate entertainment – more on that tantalisingly prospect later. Our silverware has all been flogged off (I never won anything anyway) but I will bring one or two bits and pieces of curiosity that should jog a memory or two.  There will be a table for displaying similar (your responsibility to keep an eye on it and to gather up).

It has been a little while since the very last MOBA reunion, and given the demise of the Association there ‘aint going to be any more ‘gatherings’ unless we each step forward….so, I hope to see you in May.

Manly handshakes to all
