It is with sadness we have learned of the death of Captain Robert ‘Bob’ Hann (4321) on 2nd July 2023 aged 83 at the Lady Minto Hospital in Ontario, Canada. Bob was born at Christchurch in Hampshire and while a boy sang as a chorister at Christchurch Priory. He joined the Mercury in January 1955 and among his memories he recalled how cold it was sleeping in a hammock during the winter terms and recalled his participation in Gilbert and Sullivan operas. On leaving Mercury in July 1957 he went to sea as a Merchant Navy apprentice with Bibby Line. After he married, in 1966 he and his wife emigrated to Canada where he settled in Toronto and became an accountant with a trailer company. In 1975 he returned to seafaring as an officer with BC Ferries and retired in 2001, having reached the rank of Master. According to his family Bob loved golfing, fishing, woodwork, making bread, going on cruises, and watching sports. He also taught himself to play the organ and obtained a pilot’s licence so he could fly himself to work. Bob was also blessed with a keen sense of humour and justice, and appreciated a glass of scotch.
