We have received sad news of the death of Trevor Johns (4165) 1952-55 who died in Christchurch, Dorset on13 February 2024. A former Leading Hand in Benbow Division, Trevor was elected to the Mercury Committee at the 2016 reunion where his wise counsel and calmness helped to steer the Association through tranquil waters. He was a Hampshire Scholarship boy from New Milton who in 1955 became one of the first Mercury boys to pass for GCE.
He went to sea as an Apprentice with the Clan Line and after passing his 2nd Mate’s certificate, stayed with the British and Commonwealth Shipping Group (B&C) and saw service in Bowater and Union Castle vessels. Trevor went on to pass his Master’s Certificate and in 1970 he was brought ashore by B&C, initially to assist in the Marine Department at the London head office. Later, he was involved in setting up their first container terminal in Liverpool. He later became a marine consultant, mostly with Noble Denton but, later with YARD, and during his time with both companies he worked with Brian Horrod (4060). Trevor ended his career as an independent marine consultant employed primarily by the offshore oil industries and spend time Canada and Norway. Later, while working in the Gulf he recalls a working relationship with John Williams (4855) who at the time was a Marine Superintendent based at Doha for the Qatar General Petroleum Company. In retirement Trevor lived near Christchurch. Sadly his wife and two sons pre-deceased him but he was always cheerful and always a gentleman. He will be hugely missed by all who knew him.
