Hamble Sea Scouts

January 25, 2020

I would like to thank all the members of the former Mercury Old Boys Association for supporting the committee’s proposal to use the bulk of our surplus funds for a grant to the Hamble Sea Scouts. A sum of £12,000 was transferred to them at the end of 2019 which will be a major contribution towards the purchase of 38′ yacht. This will allow them to negotiate the purchase of an excellent condition second-hand boat. Subject only to confirmation of the registration authority, it will be named Spirit of Mercury. The group already have a rowing gig named Mercury.

Hamble Sea Scouts are the oldest group of Sea Scouts and the organisation sprang out of the friendship between the then Mercury Captain Superintendent, C B Fry and the founder of the Scout Movement, Lt General (later Lord) Robert Baden Powell. Today the Hamble scouts remain proud of their heritage and links with Mercury. Many of their ex-scouts are working at sea in the Royal and Merchant Navies or in the yacht sector.

Once the yacht is commissioned we will place some pictures on this website.
