October 31, 2025

William Peter Carr (4489 ) who crossed the bar in October 2025, was born in Felixstowe in 1944. He joined the Mercury, in January 1958, where he was in Benbow Division, and left in December 1960. He was an East Suffolk scholar and why he joined the Mercury is unclear.  He went on to spend much of his working life at Felixstowe Docks but had various other jobs including as a bus driver, driving children all around Europe, and later would own his own lorry, again mostly driving out of Felixstowe docks. His family say he had a life long affinity with the water and he kept his seamanship knowledge, knots and yachting skills all his life. He  always holidayed on the water on the Norfolk Broads, Loch Ness or canals.  For the last 20 years of his life he owned a narrow boat and it was on this that he died in his sleep. His family say that to die on the wate,r for a man who was always on or near the water, would be as he wished it.’
